Marijuana is obtained from a plant with the scientific name  Cannabis sativa,  which has various substances in its composition, including Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main chemical substance with hallucinogenic effects that encourage the drug to be used recreationally.

In addition to THC, there are other cannabinoids present in marijuana such as cannabidiol (CBD), which does not have a hallucinogenic effect but according to several studies can provide various therapeutic effects.

The legal regulation of cannabis is different in each country or region, depending on whether it is for medicinal, scientific, or exclusively recreational use.

However, in some cases, cannabidiol, which is a substance extracted from the marijuana plant, can be used for therapeutic purposes by specific authorization.

What are the benefits of marijuana

In recent years, studies have shown various therapeutic properties of some of the substances present in marijuana, it is known that cannabidiol has been adopted as a pharmacological option in some countries.

Although it is not yet widely used, some of the components of marijuana have been shown to have various clinical uses, these include:

Pain treatment;


Relief of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy;

Appetite stimulant in patients with AIDS or cancer;

Treatment of seizures in people with epilepsy;

Treatment of muscle stiffness and neuropathic pain in people with multiple sclerosis;

Analgesic in terminally ill patients with cancer;

Treatment of obesity;

Treatment of anxiety and depression;

Decreased intraocular pressure, useful in cases of glaucoma;


Anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory activity.


There are some medications with cannabidiol, also known as CBD, marketed in some countries, some are Mevatyl, Epidiolex, Sativex, among others, and it is indicated for the treatment of muscle spasms in people with multiple sclerosis.

Effects of marijuana

The effects of marijuana vary from one person to another, depending on the user’s experience, the amount used, and the environment in which it is consumed, in addition to the potency of the drug.

When marijuana is smoked it can cause effects in a few minutes such as mild euphoria, alteration of the perception of time, space and the sense of organization of the body itself, disorganization of mental processes, memory disorders, lack of attention and In some cases, the person may feel more valued and with a greater capacity to socialize.

In addition to this and simultaneously with the effects that lead the person to use the drug, it can cause other symptoms such as dizziness, coordination, and movement problems, a feeling of weight in the arms and legs, dry mouth and throat, redness, and irritation. in the eyes, increased heart rate, and increased appetite.

Cautions to be taken with the use

The consumption of marijuana presents many health risks, is prohibited in some countries, however, many people continue to smoke this drug. In these cases, special attention should be paid to the following:

Avoid mixing marijuana with alcohol or other drugs;


Seek quiet places and avoid conflict situations;

Avoid using the drug when it is necessary to study, work or make important decisions;

Avoid driving when consuming marijuana, try to walk on foot or travel by public transport;

If after or during consumption, the person feels depressed, sad or anxious, he should avoid consuming again, so as not to aggravate the situation;

Be careful around people you use the drug with, but you should avoid doing it alone.

In addition to this, if the person feels unwell while using marijuana, they should seek medical help as soon as possible.

Consequences of consumption

Some of the most common and immediate side effects associated with marijuana use are increased heart rate, blood pressure, and changes in brain flow.

In addition to this, people who use marijuana regularly for some time may suffer memory disorders and a decrease in the ability to process complex information, disorders of the respiratory system, due to the constant presence of smoke in the lungs, and an increased risk of developing lung cancer.


It is important to note that marijuana if used frequently, could become a risk factor for the development of severe depression, psychotic disorders, and irreversible cognitive deficits, which can cause tolerance and psychic dependence.

Marijuana can be harmful when it is consumed at an early age when its use is chronic, and in case of intrauterine exposure to the drug during pregnancy.
