Chia seeds and cancer
Has a Quebec student discovered the cure for colon cancer?
Olivier Cloutier is an 18-year-old Cégep student, in the Rimouski region of Quebec, who won (among others) the prestigious scientific prize of the Super Expo-sciences Hydro-Quebec, thanks to a masterful experimental project in medicinal chemistry, inspired by evolutionary and traditional Inca medicine.
His project was neither more nor less a search for a cure against cancer thanks to the seeds of chia Salvia hispanica!
Her relationship with the chia seed begins with her mother, who one day brings back a bag of these sacred seeds from South America.
She explains to him all the benefits of the chia seed that she uses to lose weight, its incredible nutritional values, its cosmetic virtues, except that Olivier is a scientist, and the Inca stories interest him, but he prefers to study the small seed. like laboratories!
He says, “I started by analyzing the composition and molecular structure of chia seeds. I then became interested in the history of the chia seed and its different uses among the Mayas and the Aztecs, 5000 years ago: medical, religious, food, etc. ”
Indeed, chia is a variety of sages widely used by all Native American peoples. Third food in their traditional diet, it is one of the drugs most used by these peoples to treat many diseases, especially infections.
With the help of researchers from his region, Olivier first selected seed varieties of the Salvia Hispanic variety.
Olivier isolates polyphenolic compounds by following a protocol of extractions, filtrations, and concentrations on a rotary evaporator. It then obtains a solid residue containing the active compounds of chia seeds.
It brings into contact, in vitro, the active compounds and colorectal cancer cells of the adenocarcinoma type. It is the 3rd most common form of cancer in the world and the 2nd deadliest cancer, which forms in the colon or rectum.
Results of his study:
He observed, after 48 hours of incubation, the effect of one on the other: he counted the cells still living or dead and observed an inhibitory effect on the growth of colorectal cancer cells, and even the death of certain cells. , depending on the concentration of polyphenolic compounds.
“Mom was right,” Olivier tells us candidly. “Chia seeds not only have some incredible nutritional value but there is a special type of molecule in chia seeds that can be extracted and tested to treat cancer,” the young man informs us. “I am flabbergasted because I did not expect to have these results.”
Olivier Cloutier, therefore, notes that certain chia seed extracts have anti-cancer characteristics, making it possible to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, and even to promote the death of cancer cells, particularly colon cancer cells: colorectal cancer HCT116.
There is still a long way to go, but the results are very optimistic!
Olivier Cloutier decided to donate his results, with the help of his chemistry teacher, to a small pharmacology company in the region interested in the benefits of chia seeds.
In parallel with his studies, the young man is working there to develop an experimental remedy against colorectal cancer based on molecules taken from chia seeds. We hope that the results of this study will overcome the lobby of the pharmaceutical industry.
Case to be continued …
This young Quebecer subsequently won many other awards thanks to his discovery:
• Gold medal from the CDLS-CLS Network, senior category, winner of a $ 500 scholarship
• Prize of the Université du Québec network: with as a reward, its tuition fees offered for a bachelor’s, a master’s and a doctorate in an institution belonging to the Université du Québec network
• Francis-Boulva Recognition Award
• His experience means that he will subsequently participate in numerous Expo-Sciences as a guest, for example the MILSET International Science Fair in Brussels.
Be careful, I wrote this article to let you know of a story that I find fascinating, not to convince anyone that the treatment for colon cancer is the chia seed.
Follower of natural care, but also scientific at heart, I find more and more during my research that all the remedies are in nature and that Western science often goes in this direction, whereas the traditional medicines of the world , who have nothing to envy us, assimilated it a long time ago: Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic, Shaman, etc.
