The other main ingredient, sulfate, is an essential key mineral for many biological processes. It helps flush out toxins,   cleanse the liver, and aid in protein formation in joints and brain tissue.

There is a long list of ways to use Epsom salt in your daily life. Here are some of the main uses and benefits of Epsom salts:

1.- Increases magnesium levels

Proper magnesium levels are key to good health, but it is very common to be deficient in magnesium. Alcoholism, severe diarrhea,  malnutrition, or high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) can cause hypomagnesemia or low magnesium levels.

By simply soaking your feet or entire body in a bath containing Epsom salts, you can increase internal magnesium levels naturally without taking magnesium supplements.

Magnesium regulates more than 300 enzymes in the body and plays an important role in organizing many bodily functions. These vital functions include muscle control, energy production, electrical impulses, and the removal of harmful toxins.

Magnesium deficiencies are associated with several chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Magnesium is critical for energy production in cells. By increasing magnesium levels, you can feel revived without feeling restless. It’s much calmer energy compared to the way people feel revived by consuming caffeine.

The sulfates in Epsom salt help the body eliminate toxins. That provides detoxification of heavy metals from the cells of the body. This can help decrease the internal buildup of harmful substances.

To take magnesium sulfate orally, a typical suggestion is to dissolve one dose in eight ounces of water. Stir this mixture and drink it right away. You can add a small amount of lemon juice to enhance the flavor.


Drink plenty of fluids while taking an Epsom salt laxative to prevent dehydration. Magnesium sulfate taken by mouth should produce a bowel movement within 30 minutes to six hours.

Today, the use of intravenous magnesium sulfate is an adjunctive therapy alongside standard treatment in acute and severe exacerbations of asthma.

Magnesium sulfate is especially known for its use in treating severe cases of pre-eclampsia to prevent progression to eclampsia, which is the onset of seizures in women with pre-eclampsia.

Where to find epsom salt and how to use it

It is easy to find Epsom salt in any pharmacy and many supermarkets. And it is very affordable. One to two-pound bags are usually in stock, but smaller sizes are also available.

You can usually locate Epsom salt where you find peroxide and rubbing alcohol or in the laxative section. Once you have your Epsom salts at home, store them at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

When it comes to the external use of Epsom salts for health reasons, the most common recommendation is to soak your entire body in warm water containing one to two cups of Epsom salt for at least 20 minutes.

A half-cup of Epsom salts can also be added to a large bowl of warm water for a 20-minute foot soak. For internal use of Epsom salts, follow the guidelines on the packaging or consult your doctor.

Epsom salt also has a long history of use in the garden. For more robust vegetables, try adding a tablespoon of Epsom salts to the soil under a plant to encourage growth.

Epsom salts are also great for indoor gardening. For potted plants, simply dissolve two tablespoons of Epsom salt per gallon of water and substitute this solution for a normal watering once a month.


Do you want to get rid of slugs from your walkways and patios without using chemicals? Sprinkle some Epsom salts on it to keep them away. For itchy skin, insect bites, or sunburn, you can dissolve a tablespoon of Epsom salts in a half cup of cold water in a spray bottle and spray on the skin as needed.

Possible Side Effects of Epsom salt

Never use a higher dose of Epsom salt than recommended on the package label or as directed by your doctor. Magnesium sulfate taken by mouth can make it harder for your body to absorb other medications you take by mouth, especially antibiotics.

Avoid taking other medications within two hours before or after taking magnesium sulfate as a laxative.

If you have rectal bleeding or if you don’t have a bowel movement after using magnesium sulfate as a laxative, stop using the medication and call your doctor right away. These may be signs of a more serious condition.

Magnesium in any form, including Epsom salts, should be used with caution in patients with kidney failure, as it is processed by the kidneys and can easily reach toxic levels in those patients.

Magnesium sulfate is often used to successfully treat preeclampsia and eclampsia in pregnant women, but pregnant or nursing women should generally exercise caution and consult their doctors about the use of magnesium sulfate.

Common side effects of excessive intake of magnesium sulfate include mild gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea, abdominal cramps, and/or diarrhea.


Serious side effects of magnesium sulfate overdose include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), dizziness, flushing, weakness, rapid heartbeat irregular heartbeats, muscle paralysis or muscle weakness, severe drowsiness, and sweating.

You should tell your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms after using Epsom salts. Serious side effects of Epsom salt are rare when used in recommended doses.
